About The Boathouse

The Boathouse interiors have been lovingly designed and thoughtfully curated by owners David and Tracy. Statement pieces in the living area include a beautiful hand crafted solid wooden dining table, a cosy log burning stove and a plush teal sofa.

Davids love for photography is evident throughout the cottage, with a selection of impressive wildlife photographs on display.

Wonderful Guest Reviews

We are incredibly proud of the reviews and guest feedback we have received, along with the wonderful messages our guests have left in our Guestbook. We take great pride in the fact that many of our guests return year after year!

Our property managers Kieran and Helen live locally in Woolacombe, and are on hand during your stay should you need help or recommendations.

"We had a wonderful stay at the Boathouse. The accommodation was very homely and comfortable. Super location on the North Devon coast which gave us easy access to the local Lee and Sandy bays plus the larger beaches at Woolacombe, Croyde and Saunton Sands. The Boathouse is very secluded and had all the indoor and outdoor space we needed with very special views of Lee Bay."

"We had a great few days at the Boathouse. It’s incredibly peaceful, apart from the sound of the sea. It’s well furnished, beds v comfortable, kitchen well equipped and living area cosy and warm. We explored the coastline and local towns.

It was great to escape London and have time together. I’d thoroughly recommend the Boathouse, and we’d love to go back sometime."

"A fabulous place to stay in a beautiful location, the sound of the sea and the seabirds adding to the atmosphere.

Can’t fault the property and amenities. Coastal and woodland walks from the doorstep. Woolacombe has become a favourite place to visit."

History of The Boathouse

The Boathouse was originally known as Black Pit Cottage, taking its name from the stretch of sand running up the beach between the rocks in front of the cottage. Years ago, coal was brought to the area by ship and unloaded into carts or dumped on the beach to be carted inland. It is thought this is why the sandy strip is known as Black Pit.

However, in order to reflect the recreation and changing of the cottage, we felt it was fitting to name it after a different moment in its long, rich history. Later on, when the tourist industry in Lee was at its height, this very building was used as a boathouse, storing vessels offering trips around the bay. It is for this very reason we named our home The Boathouse.
